Day 5 - Expect the Unexpected

Ever have a day where everything you planned went out the window?  Today was that kind of day.  I actually did get up at 5am and spent 45 minutes on the elliptical.  Then, I went and picked up my boss and drove up to our training class.  But, when we got there, we found out we didn’t need to be there after all.  So, I ended up in the office with no lunch and no plan.  Fortunately, I was able to find a nice green salad for lunch that fit into my plan perfectly.  I just didn’t have my typical snacks.  It ended up working out OK, but it put me home later than I had hoped.
As soon as I got home, I changed and put in another 30 minutes on the elliptical.  It was hard, because I was already tired, but I did it.  And, I was really looking forward to aqua zumba tonight.  Then, I got a text from my cousin explaining that the pool was closed because of lightening, and she didn’t know if it would re-open for class.  I ate the dinner my husband put in front of me, packed my bag, crossed my fingers, and got in the car.
When I got to the gym, the pool was still closed, but I managed to catch my cousin before she left.  She had finished her workout, but put in another 45 minutes on a recumbent bike, just to keep me company.  (Did I mention how sweet and dedicated she is?)  By the time we were finished, my legs felt like they were going to fall off.  But, at least I got the two hours in.  It was nice to chat and catch up on family, and still feel like I was ‘being good’.
I guess the lesson I needed to learn today was to be flexible.  Whenever I get really caught up in my plans, it seems that life will throw me a curve ball.  But, if I can be flexible, I might just be surprised by something good.

  1. Being flexible is key! Something will inevitably happen to get in the way of our plans...if we are too rigid, we risk going awry when our plans don't work out. If we are flexible, we can learn to find another option if need be. Way to go!

  2. Thanks Sheri! Being flexible is so hard. Our schedules are so tight, and I plan things ahead of time as much as I can. It's hard when plans change. But, one thing my son has taught me is that being flexible is one of the most important skills we can have! (And one of the hardest!)

  3. Yup, it's hard to be flexible, but you did great! Thankfully you have the ability to be flexible. if I try that, I have a 3yo trying to do the exercises at home with me and that just means she gets in the way. Kudos to you!!!! <3

  4. Most of my days are like that Renee! Totally changing from what I planned or expected! Flexibility is one of THE hardest things to be or to deal with, some days more so than others. I agree with Sheri that Rigidity is our enemy. It's self defeating.

Your post reminds me of my daughter and her friend. Both driving home from work. One knows ONLY one way home, the other many ways home from anywhere on the route. There was an accident on the road, traffic was backed up for miles! I get a call from the one wayer, stopped at the side of the road, couldn't go any further because she didn't know how. Scared and upset. The other who was flexible, home feeling not so stressed and able to have a nice evening.

I'm so glad you were able to not be frozen due to changes in your day and to be able to move on, thinking forward and making the most of changes!! HUGS!!

  5. Thank you Coli and Colette! Coli, I can definitely see Michael trying to 'help' me. Thank goodness for summer school. As long as I get my time in while he's at school, I'm good. Otherwise I have to go to the gym or do the elliptical. That way we both stay safe!

Colette, you are so right. Every day life is going to throw a new twist at us. I'm trying really hard to see it as a challenge. To figure out how I can meet me goals, no matter what happens!
